The ukulele evolved from the Portuguese instrument known as the Braguinha, brought to Hawaii around 140 years ago by immigrants. It has become a cherished instrument for local people in Hawaii and has spread like wildfire around the world.

Since the days when King Kalakaua fell in love with its unique sound it has become an indispensable part of Hawaiian music. Widely played as a solo instrument by musicians such as Ohta-san and Eddie Kamae, and now players like Jake Shimabukuro, ukulele has also found its way into just about every musical genre there is as a rhythmic and melodic voice, both unique and charming.

Learning the history of the ukulele is no doubt a vital part of learning the instrument, however, first and foremost, learning truly begins by simply enjoying its happy “sound of Hawaii.” We assure you that a transformation will take hold when you pick up this tiny instrument and begin strumming your first chords...
