There are several different theories about the origin of hula. According to one legend the goddess Laka gave birth to hula on the island of Molokai. Another legend tells the story of the goddess Hi’iaka inventing the hula to appease her sister Pele. Regardless of its inception, there is little doubt that hula is one of the most powerful and graceful ways that a dancer can express a story and emotion.
